Dr. Shemsi I Alhaddad

Associate Professor

Dr. Alhaddad started teaching at USC Lancaster in Fall 2006 after earning a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of North Texas. She continued to increase her qualifications and is currently cleared to teach 20 USCL courses in three subjects: Mathematics, Statistics and Management Science. In 2021 Dr. Alhaddad began working in institutional research at USC Lancaster. She enjoys using statistical methods to support campus growth.

Prof. Marybeth Lee Berry was born in New Jersey and raised in Rhode Island. She minored in theater at Longwood College in Farmville where she performed in various mainstage productions. A high school drama teacher for 2 years in Orlando where she produced and directed over 10 productions, she left to pursue her graduate degree at Actors Studio in New York City where she worked Off-Broadway on Sam Shepard's newest play, God of Hell and Off-off Broadway on Stuart Vaughan's As You Like It.

Dwayne Brown

Mathematics Dwayne C. Brown, Ph.D. is a graduate of the University of South Carolina and an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at the University of South Carolina Lancaster. He teaches Discrete Mathematics, Precalculus, Calculus, and Differential Equations. He is very interested in meeting and sharing with teachers on how to use activities, games, technology, group and individual projects, and real experiences to extend what is taught in the classroom by actively engaging students in 'doing' mathematics.

Dr. Li Cai

Professor

Organic Synthesis, Biochemistry, Carbohydrate Chemistry Dr. Li Cai is an organic chemist and glyco-scientist whose research focuses on carbohydrate chemistry, enzymatic synthesis of carbohydrates, and chemical glycobiology. Dr. Cai is also devoted to enhancing the teaching and learning of chemistry, which includes advising undergraduate researches. He joined USC Salkehatchie in 2011 as an assistant professor and was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2016. In summer 2017, he joined the faculty at USC Lancaster.
the politics of U.S. foreign policy advisory systems, the political psychology of U.S. foreign policy officials, U.S. foreign policy decision-making during the Cold War Steven Campbell is an Associate Professor of Political Science at USC Lancaster. He completed his Ph.D. at USC Columbia in 2003 & has taught Political Science at USCL since 2008. Chemistry Jill Castiglia is a Senior Instructor and Lab Manager in the Department of Chemistry, USC Lancaster. She earned a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies, concentration in Teaching Science from State University of New York, Stony Brook (1996). She also earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology, concentrations in Chemistry and Secondary Education from Hofstra University, Hempstead, New York (1990).

Kimberly Covington

Kimberly Covington is an Instructor of English in the Department of Humanities, USC Lancaster. She completed a Master of Arts degree in English with a 4.0 average; Master’s thesis on the works of Eudora Welty from Winthrop University, 1994-1997. She earned a Master of Education degree in English Education with honors from Bob Jones University, 1985-1987. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in English and minor in History; graduated cum laude from Bob Jones University, 1980-1984.
20th Century South Carolina History, Civil Rights, Southern history (post-1865) My research efforts have focused on South Carolina’s efforts to end racial desegregation in the late 20th century, with a particular focus on how the state’s power structure (i.e., the political and economic “elite”) responded to the demands and allowed the Palmetto State to accommodate racial change without much of the violence, bloodshed, and chaos that engulfed many other Deep South states.
Native American Studies, Folklore, Foodways I am a folklorist with expertise in African American family reunion traditions, Southern foodways, Catawba Indian pottery and traditional culture, and Southern folklife and oral traditions.

Dr. Susan Cruise

Sociology Susan Cruise, Ph.D. is originally from Alberta, Canada! Her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees are both in Counseling Psychology, and her Doctorate (Ph.D.) is in Sociology. Most of her research has been centered on topics related to social inequalities including the academic persistence of at-risk student groups. She has also contributed to studies on various aspects of non-profit organizations.

Amy Gerald

Assistant Professor

Dr. Amy Gerald is an Assistant Professor of English and earned her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a specialty in Rhetoric and Composition. She also has a graduate certificate in Women's Studies, an MA in English from Appalachian State University and a BA in English from Wake Forest University. Dr. Gerald's scholarship lies in the intersection of feminism, rhetoric, and writing, with work appearing in journals such as Peitho.
Microbial ecology, plant-pollinator interaction, plant reproductive ecology My research interests focus around microbial ecology, diversity, and evolution, as well as plant ecology, spanning disciplines. I am also very interested in science education and laboratory development. I am interested in population and community dynamics of plants, the interaction of microbes with plants and pollinators, yeast evolution and ecology, the evolution of gender in plants, and pollination biology.
American women writers, contemporary American poetry, motherhood in contemporary American culture and literature Lisa Hammond is Professor of English at the University of South Carolina Lancaster. In addition to writing poetry, she is also an active scholar. Her research focuses on American women writers, composition and technology, and gender issues in culture. She teaches first-year composition, a wide range of sophomore-level literature courses for majors and non-majors, and a senior-level women's literature course.

Darris Hassell

Spanish Prof. Hassell teaches Beginning Spanish I, II, Elementary Spanish and Basic Proficiency in Spanish regularly. Coursework is also offered in Spanish 209/210. In addition to the Spanish language courses, Prof. Hassell serves as the Instructor for PEDU 122 (Volleyball). A graduate of Wofford College, '91 and USC Graduate School '01, Prof. Hassell has been here at USCL since 1997. He coordinates the foreign language placement testing for USCL. He has participated in travel study abroad.
Mrs. Priest was the linguist for the Catawba Cultural Preservation Project from 1995-2004. She has continued working with the Catawba Indian Nation, while teaching at Winthrop University, Chester Middle School, and York Comprehensive High School. She teaches full-time at USC Lancaster since 2007 and has been at the growing Native American Studies Center since 2012. She was born in Ontario, Canada and she grew up in Canada, Germany, Spain and France.

Vincent P. Lewis

feeding habits of a pelagic coastal fish species of major ecological and commercial importance Vincent Lewis completed his Bachelor’s Degree at the University of South Carolina in Marine Science, Master’s of Science and PhD in Zoology at North Carolina State University. He held research, teaching and administrative posts in his career. He taught at Shaw University, Hampton University, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, University of South Carolina Columbia Campus, and at the University of South Carolina Lancaster since 2009. He is an ecologist with NOAA Fisheries.

It is the goal of her research to uncover why people behave the ways they do in different social situations. She is also involved in study abroad at USCL, having co-led a number of student trips abroad.

Franklin (Evan) Nooe

Evan Nooe is an Assistant Professor of History at USC Lancaster.
Evaluation of VOCs by SPME and GC-MS, Pedagogical Chemistry Research, Biological Chemistry I am interested in applying analytical chemistry tools to solve problems in chemistry and biology. Recent projects include determining the identity and distribution of volatile organic scent compounds emanating from flowers, floral nectar, and nectar inhabiting microorganisms. I am also interested in developing novel teaching experiments that engage students at all levels.

Allan C Pangburn

Mathematics Allan Pangburn has worked at USCL since Spring 2012 after earning a Masters of Science in Mathematics from UNCW. He taught and currently teaches Contemporary Mathematics, College Algebra, and Business Calculus. While at USCL he earned 2 recognitions, USCL TRIO's Faculty of the Year for 2012-2013 and USCL Student Body Distinguished Teach of the Year Award, 2015-2016) for Math, Science, and Nursing Division. He volunteers tutoring Upward Bound students in USCL Trio's Program.

Phillip T. Parker

Phillip Parker began working full-time at the University of South Carolina Lancaster in August 2008 as a Business professor, teaching Accounting, Finance, and Insurance courses. In January 2017, earned the Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) credential after passing a strenuous exam and having the applicable background in fraud related work. In July 2017, accepted the Division Chair position for the BBCE division of USC Lancaster. He is a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Fraud Examiner.

My current work looks at Church and State relations in nineteenth-century Brazil leading up to and including the Religious Question and collapse of the Brazilian Empire. His M.S. and Ph.D. degrees are in Zoology with a specialty in ecology and animal behavior. Research interests generally center around resource use and foraging behavior in birds and mammals. Currently he is studying the effects of hydroelectric generation on foraging and movements in fish-eating birds. His hobbies include kayaking, fishing and hiking with his dogs.

Suzette J. Taylor, MSN,RN,CWOCN graduated from the University of South Carolina Lancaster’s Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program in 1997. She received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from the University of South Carolina Upstate in 2007; with the sole purpose to obtain a certification from Emory University in Wound Ostomy Continence Nursing (CWOCN). In 2017, she graduated from Walden University with a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with a focus in Nursing Education.

She has been teaching for more than eighteen years and a decade at the University of South Carolina, where she truly love working with both traditional and non-traditional students. She has been teaching Beginning Spanish I, II, Elementary Spanish and Basic Proficiency as well as Intermediate Spanish regularly. Coursework is also offered in Advance Spanish.

Dr. Nahid Swails is Assistant Professor of Physics in the department of MSNP at the University of South Carolina Lancaster. Before joining USCL in 2018, she received Ph.D. in Condensed Matter Physics from the University of South Carolina, Columbia. Dr. Swails's research interests lie in nanotechnology, fabrication of small-sized material, superconductivity, thin films, semiconductors, characterization of novel materials, mathematical modeling area, and additive manufacturing.
