Dr. Burgess' area of research is varied but focuses on vulnerable populations and health promotion and risk reduction. Her dissertation centered on teen partner abuse and she developed the first psychometric instrument to measure teen partner abuse. She also works with the School of Public Health investigating exercise in HIV patients.
