Dr. Widener is a native of South Carolina. Prior to medical school, she became involved with Family Connection of SC, a nonprofit for families who have children with special needs. Through them, she became interested in pediatric care. She attended medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina, then pursued a residency in pediatrics at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, KY. She specialized in pediatric infectious diseases at The Children's Hospital at the University of Alabama
