Name Personal Focus Summary

Dr. Deepak Bhere

Assistant Professor

Targeted Therapies for Cancer, Brain Tumors, microRNA Therapeuitcs Dr. Bhere's research interests and expertise revolve around: - Development and mechanistic evaluation of targeted therapeutics for advanced cancers - Develop imaging-based approaches to visualize and track the fate of an administered agents utilizing in vitro and in vivo experimental systems - Carryout Investigational New Drug (IND) enabling studies to advance a promising cell and gene therapeutic product from bench-to-bedside

Dr. Philip Brandon Busbee, PhD

Research Assistant Professor

Brandon Busbee, PhD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology & Immunology, School of Medicine Columbia.

James Catroppo

Clinical Associate Professor

Dr. Catroppo has particular didactic interest in pediatric and genetic pathology, pathology of the upper aerodigestive tract, and reproductive system pathology, as well as research experience in pathology of the prostate gland.

Dr. Ioulia Chatzistamou, MD

Clinical Associate Professor

experimental pathology, carcinogenesis My research interests include the histological characterization of various animal models of human disease with special emphasis in cancer. I am also interested in the deregulation of microenvironment and how this influences cancer growth and histology. Besides neoplasia, I also study tissues from animal models of human disease with a particular focus on ER stress – associated metabolic pathologies.

Mr. Reilly Enos

Assistant Professor

study an alternative to estrogen therapy, 8-Prenylnarngenin (8PN) Reilly Enos, Ph.D., assistant professor in the department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia, has been awarded a K01 grant in the amount of $716,000 from the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health/National Institutes of Health. The five-year grant runs through the year 2025 and will allow him to research a medicine that could be safer and just as effective, 8-Prenylnarngenin (8PN), found in hops.

Dr. Kathryn Alexa Orr Gandy

Clinical Assistant Professor

Kathryn Alexa Orr Gandy is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pathology, Microbiology & Immunology in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology & Immunology, School of Medicine Columbia.

Dr. Gregorio Gomez

Assistant Professor

Allergy, Asthma

Dr. Jason Lee Kubinak, PhD

Associate Professor

Defining how innate and adaptive signaling pathways influence gut antibody repertoire development, Understanding the impact of histocompatibility gene polymorphisms on anti-commensal antibody respons, Exploring the link between primary antibody deficiency (PAD) and inflammation caused by host-microbi I am a broadly trained immunologist with research interests that lie at the intersection of multiple fields including evolutionary biology, ecology, immunology, and microbiology. Broadly, my laboratory is interested in defining the molecular mechanisms that facilitate crosstalk between B cells and members of the symbiotic community of microbes that reside on the gut mucosa (the gut microbiota).
Nutritional strategies to counteract the immune suppression associated with exercise stress, Nutritional interventions to offset exercise-induced inflammation, Dietary and physical activity interventions to delay tumor progression in cancer models My research interests involve investigation of dietary and physical activity interventions to reduce macrophage-induced inflammation in cancer.

Dr. Mitzi Nagarkatti

Department Chair/Professor

Cancer, Autoimmunity, Immunotoxicology and Immunopharmacology, Complementary and Alternative Medicine The primary research interests of my lab include Cancer Immunology and Immunotherapy, Biodefense, Immunopharmacology, Immunotoxicology, and Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Currently, we are pursuing research in the following specific areas: Cancer Immunology and Immunotherapy

Dr. Prakash Nagarkatti

Academic Program Manager

Immunology, Inflammation, Cancer Prakash Nagarkatti, Ph.D. serves as Carolina Distinguished Professor, and Director of the NIH Center of Research Excellence in Inflammatory and Autoimmune Diseases. From 2011 - 2021, he served as Vice President for Research. From 2005-2011, he served as Associate Dean at the School of Medicine. His research has been continuously supported by numerous grants from NIH, NSF/EPA, and American Cancer Society.

Dr. Carole A Oskeritzian

Associate Professor

inflammatory processes, allergic airway and skin inflammatory diseases, mast cell Carole Oskeritzian, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology. Her research focus is to identify new therapeutic strategies targeting inflammatory processes, particularly the cellular and molecular events taking place in allergic airway and skin inflammatory diseases, such as asthma and atopic dermatitis, and their exacerbations, including life-threatening anaphylaxis.

Manikandan Palrasu

Research Assistant Professor

Manikandan Palrasu is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology, Immunology and Microbiology, School of Medicine Columbia.
Neuro-oncology, Neurodegeneration, Leukemia and Lymphoma The research interests of my laboratory include the understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis of malignant diseases such as glioblastoma, neuroblastoma, and Ewing's sarcoma and also neurodegenerative disorders such as spinal cord injury, brain ischemia, traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer's disease, amyotropic lateral sclerosis, epilepsy, glaucoma, Parkinson's disease, and multiple sclerosis and development of novel therapeutic strategies for their treatments.
Molecular immuniology and Immunotoxicology, Autoimmune and Inflamatory diseases, Epigenetics My lab is interested in understanding the molecular pathways through which environmental toxicants alter the immune functions. We are also interested in investigating whether resveratrol, a phytoalexin found in grapes and red wines can be used as an anti-inflammatory agent for the treatment of various autoimmune diseases (multiple sclerosis, lupus, diabetes etc).

Ms. Kandy Velazquez

Assistant Professor

how ojeok-san, a traditional herbal formula, might help curb pain for cancer patients Kandy Velázquez, Ph.D., has received a Pathway to Independence Award (K99R00) from the National Institutes of Health to study how a traditional herbal compound may help curb pain in cancer patients.
