This session will present a follow up to last year’s retreat where we first rolled out the plan for USC to become a more focused research university…we are doing this by identifying, evaluating and eventually funding several core priorities where we are poised to become nationally recognized…and which would lead us to significant increases in external funding from the federal govt and in collaborating with industrial partners.
Our panelists include Russ Pate, co-chair of our BRI; he will speak to us about the process we are using to steer our progress in one of our target areas….
Prof Borg and Markwald who represent one of our very great hopes for success, they also symbolize the importance of our increasingly active relationship with the Med U.
And in that vein, we’ll hear from our provost who will update us on the steps being taken to formalize our partnership with MUSC as a means of making it easier for researchers to collaborate and also to bring new excellence to our educational and outreach activities.
Good YTD…we are ahead of last year’s blockbuster pace that saw a 20% increase and higher research expenditures than prior years (this is a relevant metric) …
This slide shows that we are doing significantly better in biomedical research (projected to be about 30% higher than last year) …one of the reasons why we created the Division of Health Sciences to samk even greater productivity.

Our themes are all making good progress…just a glimpse of progress:
NanoScience
EAB visit….two highlights…one is the pioneering work that has brought faculty from the Philosophy dept and English in touch with our chemists and engineers…..Davis Baird is receiving broad acclaim and last year was awarded a $1.35 million grant from NSF to study the ethical and societal implications of NanoScience..in short he studies the barriers that may exist as we infuse our daily lives and our workplaces with advances caused by manipulation of matter at the sub-visual level.. The nano level.  I ask you to recognize Davis, who is here with us today
Also, Professor Richard Webb will be joining USC this summer…article
